Fitting it right, Do's & Don'ts

Quick rules for fitters and DIYers. Get these right and the system lasts decades.

DO

  • Always insulate underneath with our recommended insulation, directly onto the subfloor (whether it's wood or flowable).
  • Cover at least 70%+ of the floor for primary heat. Less than that just needs an infrared panel or a radiator to top it up.
  • Extend into the plinths of kitchen units, so you don't get warm heels and cold toes.
  • It can go under freestanding baths, showers and kitchen units, just leave an air gap so the heat escapes.
  • Level the subfloor and check your flooring product is suitable before you start.
  • Glue laminate joints with a D3 / PVA waterproof adhesive.
  • Mount the thermostat in the right room, at the right height, all the runs link back to one thermostat.
  • Use a qualified electrician for the 240 V final connection (Part P).

DON'T

  • No need to bury it in concrete or screed. The Ribbon is a surface application, it heats the room, not a slab. (You can screed over it for a high-traffic commercial floor, but it's never required.)
  • Don't exceed 2.8 Tog combined carpet + underlay. Anything thicker traps the heat above the Ribbon.
  • Don't cover it with additional insulation, Kingspan, foam or beanbags. Extra insulation on top blocks the Ribbon's heat, that's a cable/water requirement, not ours.
  • Don't go solid wood without the right method. Three work, battens at 500 mm centres, latex levelling, or an overboard. Ask Russell which suits your job.
  • Don't connect the 240 V supply yourself. Always a Part P qualified electrician.

Goes Where No Other System Can

The only electric underfloor heating that's a true primary heat source, on top of any subfloor, directly under any floor finish, in almost any space. Cable and water systems can't.

Any room

Kitchens · Lounges · Bedrooms · Bathrooms · Conservatories · Hallways · Extensions · Renovations · New builds

Under any floor

Carpet · Wood · Laminate · Vinyl / LVT · Stone & tile

The only system that runs directly under all of them, because it works at a safe 28°C, not the 40–90°C cable and water need.

Spaces nobody else heats

Campervans · Motorhomes · Static caravans · Garage conversions · Annexes & granny flats · Apartments & flats · Greenhouses · Animal stables

Outdoors & access

Patios · Driveways · Disabled-access ramps

As automatic snow-melt and ice prevention for safe access underfoot.

Runs on your own power

Solar panels · Home battery storage

Low-energy and zoned, so it pairs perfectly with solar and battery, heat your home on power you've already generated.

Every one of these = primary heat

No boiler, no screed, no central-heating rebuild. Do one room or the whole house.

Ask about your space →

"My electrician said electric heating is too expensive…"

They're picturing old wire-cable systems. The Ribbon Heating System is a different technology entirely, here's the honest difference.

"It can't be a primary heat source"

True of traditional cable, its elements sit 100–150 mm apart, so it can only top a room up. The Ribbon packs elements just 10–50 mm apart: 300% more coverage. That's what heats a room on its own, certified as primary heat, at a safe, even 28°C.

"It'll cost a fortune to run"

Cable systems bury in a 40–70 mm concrete slab and run blistering hot for hours. The Ribbon sits directly under your floor with no screed, reaches temperature in 3 minutes, then cycles on and off. It heats the room, not a slab of concrete.

"Doesn't it take hours to warm up?"

That's water underfloor, pumping heat into concrete for 2–3 hours. The Ribbon core is warm in 3 minutes, through carpet in 5, laminate in 10. On, warm, satisfied, off.

The golden rule

Don't lose heat, don't need heat. Insulate the space well and the Ribbon runs at peak efficiency, drawing power for only about a quarter of each active hour.

The Story Behind EkoBuild

Founded in 2001 by Russell White, the man who built his own zero-energy home to prove it works.

Sole UK Importer Since 2001

We Don't Just Sell It.
We Live It.

Russell White founded EkoBuild with one mission: bring genuine zero-running-cost heating to any building. After years installing and testing mainstream systems, and finding heat pumps and biomass boilers riddled with inefficiencies, he became convinced advanced electric was the real future of clean heating. He's been the sole UK importer of the AHT amorphous-metal Ribbon system since 2001.

And he didn't stop at selling it. Russell built his own 360 m² eco house heated entirely by the Ribbon system, five bathrooms, wet rooms, stone floors, laminate and plush carpet, all warmed seamlessly. The result: zero net annual running costs, plus around £1,000 a year of surplus energy income.

Over 100 homes across the UK now run on EkoBuild, with 300% more heating coverage than standard systems. Every product is proven in Russell's own home first. No hard sell, just honest advice from someone who genuinely lives with what he recommends.

Estimates based on Russell's own method (150W/m² over 70% floor coverage, ~6 hrs/day, 28p/kWh) and an average-home duty cycle. Actual results depend on usage, insulation, and energy prices, so every job is tested on site.

Why our estimate is lower than "standard" electric heating

Standard cable systems pull power continuously for hours to heat a deep concrete slab. The Ribbon sits directly below your floor covering, so there's no slab to warm. It reaches temperature in about 3 minutes, then the thermostat cycles it off. The Ribbon draws 150 watts per m² across the 70% of the floor it covers, but it only actively pulls power for about 25% of each hour it's on in an average home, and nearer 7–10% in a well-insulated (EPC A–B) one. So a typical 12m² room works out around 50p a day to run in an average home, and close to nothing once a home is well insulated. Russell walks through this exact maths on EkoBuild's TikTok, and every job is tested on site.

Don't lose heat, don't need heat. Insulating the space properly stops structural drafts and keeps your running costs at their lowest.

Knowledge Base

Everything you need to make the right decision.

Can this really work as primary heat? +
Yes, at 70%+ floor coverage it's a genuine primary heat source. The Ribbon has 300% more heating elements than cable systems, so it warms up in about 3 minutes and runs at a safe, even 28°C. Because it never has to run blistering hot, it can sit directly under any floor finish, there's no concrete slab to heat first. Use our Room Designer above to check your exact coverage.
What coverage do I need? +
Minimum 70% floor coverage for primary heating. 80%+ is ideal. Bathrooms may need an infrared panel supplement due to sanitaryware reducing coverage. Our Room Designer calculates this precisely, drag in your fixtures and it flags immediately whether you meet the threshold.
Can I install it myself? +
Yes. The Ribbon is DIY-friendly, lay your insulation, lay the Ribbon, then lay your floor finish over it. No screed to pour. The final electrical connection needs a qualified electrician (Part P). Full installation guides are included.
How fast does it warm up? +
Through carpet: 5 minutes. Laminate/vinyl: 10 minutes. Tile/stone: 10–15 minutes. Standard cable systems take 30–60 minutes.
What are the running costs? +
A typical 12m² room costs around 50p a day to run in an average home, and close to nothing once a home is well insulated. A well-insulated whole home is roughly £400–600 a year. The Ribbon draws 150W per m² across 70% of the floor but only pulls power for about 25% of each hour it's on (nearer 7–10% well-insulated), so it runs a fraction of the time a cable system does. Use our Savings Calculator above for your specific situation.
What warranty do you offer? +
15 years, honoured directly by the UK importer. We stand behind our products because we use them ourselves.

What Our Customers Say

Real feedback from UK homeowners who made the switch to EkoBuild.

★★★★★
"Russell is very knowledgeable and passionate about energy and saving money. He describes the products and more importantly just how they work together to get the most from the systems. The ribbon underfloor heating can be used as the main heat source and this was clearly explained. The install was easy and with the help of EkoBuild I have managed to save money too."

★★★★★
"We fitted the EkoBuild system throughout our entire ground floor renovation, kitchen, hallway, and living room. The mats went down in a day, electrician connected it the next morning. Warm floors within minutes of switching on. Our gas boiler hasn't fired up since. Russell talked us through everything and even helped with the room layout."

★★★★★
"Sceptical at first about electric heating being the primary source, but Russell invited us to see his own eco house. The man literally lives in it, no gas, no oil, just the ribbon mats and solar panels. That sold us. Two years on, our energy bills are a fraction of what they were with the oil boiler."
