What "no screed" actually means
Screed is the layer of sand and cement, or a liquid pour, that goes over the top of a wet underfloor heating system to hold the pipes and spread the heat. With a traditional water system you lay the pipes, pour screed over them, then wait for it to set before you can lay your floor.
"No screed" underfloor heating skips that layer. The heating goes down, your finished floor goes straight on top, and there is no wet pour in between. Why avoiding screed matters
Screed is the part of an underfloor heating job that wrecks renovations. It is the reason a lot of people give up on warm floors. Here is what it brings with it:
- Floor height. Screed adds real depth to your floor. In an existing room that eats your headroom, fouls your door swings, and leaves a step between rooms.
- Drying time. Traditional screed can take weeks to dry before you can lay your floor or even heat it. Your room is out of action the whole time.
- Mess and disruption. It is a wet trade. Mixers, hoses, dust, and a room you cannot use while it cures.
- Cost. The screed itself, the labour to lay it, and often a digout to make room for it all add up fast.
- Renovation risk. Ripping up a finished floor to lay screed is a deal breaker on most retrofits. It turns a simple upgrade into a building job.

Why most "no screed" systems are still wet
Search "underfloor heating no screed" and most of what comes back is forum threads and wet systems wearing a low-profile badge. This is the part the competitor blogs hedge on, so here is the honest version.
Most "low profile, no screed" products are still water systems. They run warm water through pipes, the same as any wet underfloor heating. To avoid a deep screed pour they sit the pipes in routed overlay panels or a thin self-levelling layer. That removes the deep digout, but it is not nothing. You are still adding a board build-up, you still have a wet trade on site, and you still need a manifold, a pump, and a heat source feeding it. "No screed" in that world really means "less screed than usual."
An electric system is a different thing entirely. There is no water, no manifold, no pump and no pour. With the ribbon the heating layer is the ribbon, full stop. That is what makes it genuinely no-screed, not low-screed.

Does no screed mean less heat?
This is the worry that stops people, and the answer is no. The screed in a wet system is not magic. It is just a way of holding pipes and moving heat. Skip it and you lose the depth and the drying time, not the warmth.
The thing that actually controls how warm a no-screed floor feels, and how cheap it is to run, is insulation. The floor warms faster, holds heat better, and costs less to run. A no-screed floor with insulation under it can warm up quicker than a screeded one, because there is no thick wet mass to heat through first.

Which floors it goes under
Because there is no screed, the ribbon works under almost any floor finish:
- Carpet, including as a primary heat source, which most electric systems cannot do
- Laminate and engineered wood
- Vinyl and LVT
- Stone and tile
This is exactly where no-screed matters most. Floating floors like laminate and engineered wood do not want a wet pour under them anyway, so a thin taped-down layer is the natural fit. And carpet, which a screeded wet system would never sit happily under, runs fine over the ribbon.
