Can underfloor heating go under bamboo flooring?

Yes, and cork as well. The only question that matters is whether your bamboo is engineered or solid, because that decides whether it lays straight over the Ribbon or goes on battens.

Yes. Bamboo flooring goes over the Ribbon, and so does cork. Engineered and strand-woven click bamboo floats straight over the Ribbon with no screed and no battens, up to 22mm thick. Solid bamboo is fitted on battens, the same as any solid floor. Get the format right and bamboo is one of the easier floors to heat.

Why bamboo works over the Ribbon

Bamboo has a reputation for being fussy over heating, and that reputation comes from old cable and water systems. Those run at 40 to 90°C and bury in a screed, and that swing is what moves a natural board about.

The Ribbon is a different thing. It operates at 27 to 28°C, averaging about 27°C, and the floor surface settles at 24 to 25°C once the heat has come up through the board. Bamboo never sees the temperatures that cause the problems people warn you about.

It is also only 1.8mm thick and needs no screed, so it does not raise your floor level or add a wet trade to the job. You insulate the subfloor, lay the Ribbon, then lay your bamboo over the top.

Which build-up your bamboo needs

There is one question that decides everything: is your bamboo engineered, or is it solid?

Engineered bamboo, click or floatingLays straight over the Ribbon, up to 22mm thick. No battens, no screed, nothing in between beyond an underlay rated for underfloor heating.
Strand-woven bamboo, click formatAs engineered. It is dense and stable, and it floats over the Ribbon in the normal way.

Thickness is the other thing to watch. Up to 22mm lays straight over and heats well. Go thicker and the warm-up stretches out and you lose efficiency, because you are pushing heat through more board than you need to.

Solid bamboo goes on battens

Solid bamboo is not off the table, it just goes down differently. Solid floors are fitted on battens, with the Ribbon set out in the batten build-up, and correctly fitted that way solid bamboo works well.

What you cannot do is lay solid boards flat onto the Ribbon the way you can with engineered. Plan the batten build-up before you buy the boards, not after, because the flooring decision drives the heating build-up and not the other way round.

You do not need a gap around the edges

This one catches people out, because it is true of some other systems and it is not true of ours. The Ribbon needs no gap around the edges of the room. It runs right up to the walls.

Your bamboo boards are a separate matter. A floating floor needs the perimeter expansion gap the board manufacturer specifies, covered by skirting or beading afterwards. That gap sits in the flooring layer above the heating, so it takes nothing away from your heated area.

Cork flooring works too

Cork is the other floor people assume is a no, and it is a yes. Click and floating cork lays straight over the Ribbon in the same way as engineered bamboo. Glue-down cork tiles need a smooth solid surface underneath, so a levelling compound or an overlay board over the Ribbon.

The one thing to check with cork is how thick you go. Cork is a natural insulator, which is exactly why it feels warm underfoot, and a thick cork floor slows the heat coming through. Keep it thin, and ask your supplier for the thermal resistance figure before you buy. If you tell us the product, we will tell you straight whether it suits primary heat or wants topping up.

Fitting notes that apply to both

  • Insulate the subfloor first with our recommended insulation, so heat goes up into the room instead of down.
  • Acclimatise the boards in the room before fitting, for as long as the flooring manufacturer directs.
  • Use an underlay rated for underfloor heating, with a low tog. Thick insulating underlay blocks the heat.
  • Do not cover the Ribbon with extra insulation, foam or boarding. That is a cable and water requirement, not ours.
  • Never cut, fold or overlap the Ribbon. If a mat does not fit, change the layout or the mat size.
  • Have your electrician test the mats before anything covers them, and make the 240 V final connection under Part P.

Temperature limits

Bamboo and cork manufacturers set a maximum floor surface temperature. No floor surface should exceed 27 to 28°C.

The Ribbon operates at 27 to 28°C, averaging about 27°C, and the floor surface settles at 24 to 25°C because the heat cools as it passes up through the floor finish. That sits inside the limit rather than against it.

Set the figure from your product datasheet as the cap on the thermostat's floor probe and the floor cannot exceed it.

Can it be the room's main heating?

Yes. The Ribbon runs at 150W per m², and with at least 70% of the floor covered in a suitable room it is designed as the primary heat source rather than a warm surface.

Below 70% it is a supplementary heat source, and we spec an infrared panel to make up the gap.

Warm-up is quick. The Ribbon is producing heat in about 3 minutes, and warmth comes through a bamboo board in 15 to 20 minutes, the same as wood and laminate.
