Why bamboo works over the Ribbon
Natural floor finishes need a heating-compatible product, appropriate moisture conditions and controlled temperatures. Cable, water and ribbon systems have product-specific requirements; check the complete approved floor construction rather than assuming a temperature range from the heating technology alone.
Follow the exact flooring manufacturer’s temperature limit and installation requirements. A suitable thermostat and floor sensor must limit the floor temperature. Do not assume the heating mat automatically stays below a flooring limit: controls, floor construction and commissioning all matter.
It is also only 1.8mm thick and needs no screed, but insulation, any underlay and the bamboo finish add to the complete floor height. You insulate the subfloor, lay the Ribbon, then lay your bamboo over the top.
How bamboo goes down over the Ribbon

Solid bamboo floats too
Suitable solid bamboo can use the approved floating construction over the Ribbon, up to 22mm. A compatible 22mm board still needs the manufacturer’s approval for that construction, including the specified underlay and other required layers.
Solid timber normally uses a specified batten construction unless the board manufacturer approves another suitable method. Check the exact flooring product and complete construction before buying; the floor choice determines the required layers.
You do not need a gap around the edges
This one catches people out, because it is true of some other systems and it is not true of ours. The Ribbon needs no gap around the edges of the room. It runs right up to the walls.
Your bamboo boards are a separate matter. A floating floor needs the perimeter expansion gap the board manufacturer specifies, covered by skirting or beading afterwards. That gap sits in the flooring layer above the heating, so it takes nothing away from your heated area.
Cork flooring works too
Check that the exact cork product is approved for the selected heating construction, and obtain its total thermal resistance. Floating cork and bonded cork need their own approved layers; do not assume either can be laid directly over the Ribbon.
Cork is an insulator, so obtain the exact product’s thermal resistance and approved construction before buying. To assess primary heating, we also need the complete floor layers, usable mat layout and a room heat-loss assessment; the product name or thickness alone is not enough.
Fitting notes that apply to both
- Insulate the subfloor first with our recommended insulation, so heat goes up into the room instead of down.
- Acclimatise the boards in the room before fitting, for as long as the flooring manufacturer directs.
- Use an underlay rated for underfloor heating, with a low tog. Thick insulating underlay blocks the heat.
- Use only the approved floor layers above the Ribbon. Unspecified insulating layers or coverings can trap heat. Follow the complete heating and flooring instructions rather than applying another product’s installation method.
- Never cut, fold or overlap the Ribbon. If a mat does not fit, change the layout or the mat size.
- Have your electrician test the mats before anything covers them, and make the 240 V final connection under Part P.

Set and commission the floor-temperature limit from the flooring datasheet using suitable controls and a correctly positioned sensor. A setting alone does not guarantee the temperature at every point; keep heat free to escape and have faults checked.
Can it be the room's main heating?
Ribbon can provide primary heating when the usable output from the fitted mats meets the room’s calculated heat loss at the permitted floor temperature. Around 70–80% useful coverage is a planning aim, not a pass/fail test. Confirm the complete heating design before removing existing heating.
Lower coverage needs a room-specific output and heat-loss assessment; it does not automatically require an infrared panel.
Warm-up time varies with the floor construction, starting temperature, control settings and room conditions. Initial warmth at the surface is different from heating the whole room; a demonstration time is not a guaranteed result for your installation.
