One of the most common questions about electric underfloor heating is: "Will it work with my floor?" The short answer is yes. EkoBuild's AHT ribbon technology works under all floor types. But some floors transfer heat better than others, and the warm-up time varies. Here's what you need to know about each option.

Tile and Stone
Porcelain, Ceramic, Slate, Marble, Limestone
Tile and stone are the best flooring types for underfloor heating. They conduct heat very well and retain warmth long after the system cycles off. That means the thermostat runs the heating less, which saves money.
The warm-up time is slightly longer (10-15 minutes) because the tiles absorb heat before releasing it. But once warm, they stay warm. This makes them perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, and hallways where you want consistent heat.
Tips: Use flexible tile adhesive and grout rated for underfloor heating. Standard adhesive can crack as the floor expands and contracts. Most good-quality tile adhesives are fine, but check the label.
Laminate
Laminate Flooring
Laminate is one of the most popular choices for underfloor heating. It's thin, which means heat passes through quickly. Warm-up times of 5-10 minutes are typical. It's also affordable and easy to install as a floating floor over the Ribbon heating.
Most modern laminate is designed to work with underfloor heating. Check the manufacturer's rating and make sure the maximum floor temperature is compatible (EkoBuild's thermostat lets you set a floor temperature limit).
Tips: Leave expansion gaps around the edges of the room. Use the underlay recommended by the laminate manufacturer. If the laminate comes with built-in underlay, don't add another layer as it will insulate against the heat.
Vinyl and LVT
Vinyl, Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT), Vinyl Plank
Vinyl and LVT are excellent partners for underfloor heating. The material is thin, so heat transfers quickly. Modern LVT comes in realistic wood and stone effects, so you get the look of natural materials with better heat performance.
Vinyl is also waterproof, making it a strong choice for bathrooms and kitchens where you might otherwise use tile.
Tips: Check the manufacturer's maximum temperature rating. Most vinyl flooring is fine up to 27°C floor temperature, which is more than enough for comfortable warmth. Use the adhesive recommended by the manufacturer. Avoid thick, cushioned vinyl as the extra padding acts as insulation.
Engineered Wood
Engineered Hardwood
Engineered wood works well with underfloor heating because its layered construction resists the expansion and contraction that heat causes. Unlike solid wood (which we'll get to), engineered boards stay stable.
The key is thickness. Thinner boards (under 18mm total) transfer heat better. Thicker boards take longer to warm up and reduce efficiency.
Tips: Choose boards no thicker than 18mm. Wider boards (over 180mm) can gap slightly at the joins; narrow or medium-width boards are safer. Allow the boards to acclimatise in the room for 48 hours before installation. Floating installation is usually better than glued-down for underfloor heating.
Carpet
Carpet
Yes, you can use carpet with electric underfloor heating. The warm-up time is actually the fastest at 3-5 minutes because carpet itself feels warm to the touch. But there's an important condition: the total tog rating of the carpet plus underlay must be below 2.8 tog.
Higher tog ratings insulate against the heat, forcing the system to work harder and costing more to run. A thick, luxurious carpet with heavy underlay will block too much heat. A thin loop pile or short twist with minimal underlay works well.
Tips: Ask for the tog rating before buying. Carpet tiles are a good option as they typically have low tog values. Avoid thick shag pile or heavy wool carpet. Use thin, firm underlay rather than thick spongy underlay. The combined tog of carpet + underlay must stay under 2.8.
Solid Wood
Solid Hardwood
Solid wood is the one floor type we don't recommend with underfloor heating. Solid timber expands and contracts significantly with temperature changes. Over time, this causes gaps between boards, cupping, and sometimes warping or cracking.
Some solid wood manufacturers claim their boards are suitable, but the risk of movement is high enough that most installers and heating specialists advise against it. If you want the look of real wood, engineered hardwood is the right choice. It gives you a real wood surface layer with the dimensional stability you need.

- Living rooms: Laminate, LVT, engineered wood, or low-tog carpet. Pick what matches your style.
- Bedrooms: Low-tog carpet for comfort underfoot, or engineered wood. Both work well.
- Hallways: Tile, LVT, or laminate. Durable and good heat transfer in high-traffic areas.
