Best Flooring for Electric Underfloor Heating

One of the most common questions about electric underfloor heating is: "Will it work with my floor?" The short answer is yes. EkoBuild's AHT ribbon technology works under all floor types. But some floors transfer heat better than others, and the warm-up time varies. Here's what you need to know about each option.

Tile and Stone

Porcelain, Ceramic, Slate, Marble, Limestone Excellent

Warm-up time: around 20 minutes

Tile and stone are the best flooring types for underfloor heating. They conduct heat very well and retain warmth long after the system cycles off. That means the thermostat runs the heating less, which saves money.

The warm-up time is longer, around 20 minutes, because the tiles absorb heat before releasing it. But once warm, they stay warm. This makes them perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, and hallways where you want consistent heat.

Tips: Use flexible tile adhesive and grout rated for underfloor heating. Standard adhesive can crack as the floor expands and contracts. Most good-quality tile adhesives are fine, but check the label.

Laminate

Laminate Flooring Very Good

Warm-up time: 15 to 20 minutes

Laminate is one of the most popular choices for underfloor heating. It floats straight over the Ribbon with no screed and no self-leveller. Expect warmth coming through in 15 to 20 minutes. It's also affordable and easy to install as a floating floor over the Ribbon heating.

Most modern laminate is designed to work with underfloor heating. Check the manufacturer's rating and make sure the maximum floor temperature is compatible (EkoBuild's thermostat lets you set a floor temperature limit).

Tips: Leave the board expansion gaps around the edges of the room. That is a flooring requirement, not a heating one: the ribbon needs no gap around the edges. Use the underlay recommended by the laminate manufacturer. If the laminate comes with built-in underlay, don't add another layer as it will insulate against the heat.

Vinyl and LVT

Vinyl, Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT), Vinyl Plank Very Good

Warm-up time: 15 to 20 minutes

Vinyl and LVT are excellent partners for underfloor heating, but they are not the same product and they do not go down the same way. Rigid click LVT is about 5mm and stiff enough to float straight over the Ribbon. Sheet vinyl is about 2mm and flexible, so it normally goes into a levelling compound, or onto a dry overlay board in a low-traffic domestic room. Modern LVT comes in realistic wood and stone effects, so you get the look of natural materials with better heat performance.

Vinyl is also waterproof, making it a strong choice for bathrooms and kitchens where you might otherwise use tile.

Tips: Check the manufacturer's maximum temperature rating. Most vinyl flooring is fine up to 27°C floor temperature, which is more than enough for comfortable warmth. Use the adhesive recommended by the manufacturer. Avoid thick, cushioned vinyl as the extra padding acts as insulation.

Engineered Wood

Engineered Hardwood Good

Warm-up time: around 20 minutes

Engineered wood works well with underfloor heating because its layered construction resists the expansion and contraction that heat causes. Unlike solid wood (which we'll get to), engineered boards stay stable.

The ribbon goes straight under engineered board, with no battens and no screed. Thickness is the thing to watch: up to 22mm works, and thinner boards transfer heat faster. Go thicker than 22mm and warm-up times stretch out and efficiency drops.

Tips: Choose boards up to 22mm thick and lay them straight over the ribbon. Wider boards (over 180mm) can gap slightly at the joins; narrow or medium-width boards are safer. Allow the boards to acclimatise in the room for 48 hours before installation. Floating installation is usually better than glued-down for underfloor heating.

Carpet

Carpet Good (with caveats)

Warm-up time: about 5 minutes

Yes, you can use carpet with electric underfloor heating. The warm-up time is actually the fastest at about 5 minutes, because carpet itself feels warm to the touch. But there's an important condition: the total tog rating of the carpet plus underlay must be below 2.8 tog.

Higher tog ratings insulate against the heat, forcing the system to work harder and costing more to run. A thick, luxurious carpet with heavy underlay will block too much heat. A thin loop pile or short twist with minimal underlay works well.

Tips: Ask for the tog rating before buying. Carpet tiles are a good option as they typically have low tog values. Avoid thick shag pile or heavy wool carpet. Use thin, firm underlay rather than thick spongy underlay. The combined tog of carpet + underlay must stay under 2.8.

Solid Wood

Solid Hardwood Yes, with the right method

Warm-up time: 15 to 20 minutes

Solid wood needs more care than the others, because real timber moves with its moisture content as well as with heat. Done wrong you get gaps between boards, cupping, and sometimes warping. Done right it works, and Russell has fitted plenty of it.

The method is battens. Fit the ribbon on battens, correctly set out, and solid wood works over the top. Do not lay solid boards straight onto the ribbon. Plan the batten build-up before you buy the boards, not after, and if you are not sure how it works with your subfloor, ask us first.

Engineered wood is the simpler route if you want a real wood surface, because it goes straight over the ribbon with no battens at all, at up to 22mm thick. But solid wood is not off the table. On battens, correctly fitted, it is a job Russell has done plenty of times.

Bamboo

Bamboo Very Good

Warm-up time: 15 to 20 minutes

Bamboo is written off for underfloor heating more often than it deserves, and the reason is old cable and water systems running at 40 to 90°C. The Ribbon runs at 27 to 28°C, so bamboo never sees the temperature swing that causes the trouble.

Bamboo floats, whatever the format. Engineered, strand-woven click and solid bamboo all go straight over the Ribbon, up to 22mm thick, with no battens and no screed. Battens are a solid timber thing, because of the moisture content in real wood.

Tips: Stay at 22mm or under. Acclimatise the boards before fitting. Use an underlay rated for underfloor heating with a low tog. Full detail on the bamboo flooring page.

Cork

Cork Good (with caveats)

Warm-up time: depends on thickness

Cork works over the Ribbon. Click and floating cork planks lay straight over it. Glue-down cork tiles need a smooth solid surface, so a levelling compound or an overlay board.

The caveat is thickness. Cork is a natural insulator, which is why it feels warm underfoot, and a thick cork floor slows the heat coming through from below. It is the same principle as the tog limit on carpet.

Tips: Keep the cork thin. Ask your supplier for the thermal resistance of the finished floor and send it to us with the room size before you buy. Do not stack a cork underlay under a cork floor. Full detail on the cork flooring page.
